TEACHING ON THE INSIDE
A Survival Handbook for the New Correctional Educator
by Pauline Geraci
Author Pauline Geraci states that her book, Teaching on the Inside: A Survival Handbook for the New Correctional Educator, is "not about how to teach offenders, but rather an overview of what it can be like to teach in a correctional setting." Geraci also states that teaching inmates can be an "extremely rewarding," yet "daunting task."
This book introduces new teachers to inmate culture and its significance to correctional education. It places equal emphasis on how to teach and how to interact with the correctional client. Finally, it explores the relationship of correctional organization and staff to the correctional educator.
Teaching on the Inside is divided into thirteen readable chapters filled with

practical advice and vignettes drawn from the author’s experience as a correctional educator. It also includes a foreword, an introduction, terms and definitions, and a teacher’s self-assessment. An extensive bibliography attests to the research done in the preparation of the booK. A must-read for the new correctional educator, this book is also helpful to all correctional staff.

GR204     $12.95

  About the Author:
Correctional educator and writer Pauline Geraci received the Marvin Sull Award in both 1999 and 2001 for creative teaching that impacts inmates in the classroom and the community. She has also been nominated twice as teacher of the year – at New River Correctional in Florida and at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater. Geraci’s writing has been published in the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, the Journal of Correctional Education, and Reading Today.
